Reserve Capacity and Amp-Hours: Two Battery Ratings

Reserve capacity and amp-hours describe different aspects of battery capacity under defined conditions. Read them alongside the vehicle specification; neither is a direct promise of how long your parked car will start reliably.

Read the units before the number

A specification sheet can contain several capacity and performance fields. Identify the unit and heading before comparing the values. A number labelled minutes answers a different question from a number labelled amp-hours.

The Interstate product specification example lists reserve-capacity minutes at a stated load separately from amp-hours. It illustrates the distinction in labelling; the example model is not a recommendation for your vehicle.

Ask what the vehicle requires

Use the exact application and approved technology to choose a replacement. Ask the supplier to explain which capacity requirement applies and how the proposed model meets it. Keep that explanation with the part number and other specification details.

VARTA's AGM product guidance distinguishes amp-hour capacity from cold-start current. Treat those fields as complementary information rather than interchangeable measures of quality.

Keep real use separate from a test rating

A battery label is not a timetable for leaving a car unused. The vehicle's electrical demand, the battery's condition and its charge history all belong in a storage discussion. Ask for a vehicle-specific maintenance plan rather than dividing one printed rating by an assumed load.

The parked-car care article helps structure that plan. If you are trying to explain a repeated discharge, record the pattern and request appropriate testing instead of buying solely by a larger capacity figure.

Create a readable specification note

  • Required battery technology and approved part number.
  • CCA figure with the stated standard.
  • Capacity fields with their actual units.
  • Confirmed fit and any installation setup.

Use that note when comparing alternatives. If a seller's listing omits a required field, ask for the full product specification. When two recommendations disagree, take the complete notes to a qualified technician. A short record of clearly labelled requirements is more useful than a collection of unrelated high numbers.
